Ivatt Tank No. 41241 double heads with 43106 just outside of Hampton Loade. 813 is seen with the morning goods heading for Bridgnorth. Stanier Mogul No. 42968 stands at Hampton Loade. 43106 & 41241 are seen together once more at Bewdley. Star of the long lost Longmoor Millitary Railway is WD 2-10-0 No. 600 'Gordon' On loan from the National Railway Museum is Midland Compound No. 1000. GWR Hall No. 4930 Hagley Hall awaits her return to 'real' steam. 4930 & 600 emit steam and sounds every few minutes. One day soon 4930 may breath steam again... Last survivor of her class is Outside cylinder Pannier No. 1501. She is due out the engine house in October for overhaul. BR Standard Class 4MT No. 80079 stands cold. A SVR favourite, LMS 8F No. 48773 awaits her call back to work. LMS 3F 'Jinty' No. 47383 is seen coupled to some wagons. N2 No. 1744 is seen with the teaks at Highley. Pannier tank No. 7714 was withdrawn from traffic a few weeks back, she is due to go in the engine house then will be overhauled. 'Catch me who can' was in steam at the back of Bridgnorth shed. Standard 4 4-6-0 No. 75069 in pieces, i have been told she will not be overhauled due to cost, i hope this isn't true. The beginnings of something exciting, the frames of Standard 3MT No. 82045. Manors together, 7802 'Bradley Manor' stands alongside 7812 'Erlestoke Manor'. 7802 was put on the back of one of the last service trains and left at Kidderminster to prepare for departure for the WSR gala. 5164 stands by the yard at Bridgnorth. At Bewdley we see three of the stars, GNR N2 No. 1744, GWR Manor No. 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' & Large Prairie No. 5164. Ivatt 2MT No. 46443 and Ex-Port Talbort No. 813 are captured over the pit. The N2 is seen again, she has spent the last few weeks at the North Norfolk Railway, her usual base is the Great Central Railway. At Bewdley 813 couples to the goods. Visiting from Tyseley, 4936 'Kinlet Hall' runs light engine between Bridgnorth & Kidderminster. 813 departs Bewdley with the goods for Arley. At Hampton Loade we see GWR Pannier Tank No. 5764 shunting the local stock into the siding. As usual the Paddock Railway was in operation, and is often running till at least midnight on the galas! 46443 awaits departure from Hampton Loade. Arriving at Arley is the N2. 813 arrives at Arley with local stock. At Kidderminster visitors had the chance to view this newly restored LMS dining coach. A vintage bus poses outside the station. Fresh from overhaul, Ivatt 4MT No. 43106 awaits departure. 4936 'Kinlet Hall' is seen after being failed. Visiting from the Keighley & Worth Valley Railway, Ivatt Tank No. 41241 double heads with resident Ivatt No. 46443 at Bewdley. Probably the only shot i got of 5164 operating service trains. 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' stands over the pit. 4936 is cleaned and repaired in time for her next days duties. 1744 arrives with the GNR teaks, a combination everybody wanted to see! GWR Large Prairie No. 4150 hides at the back at Bewdley. This locomotive will be the last full barry restoration the line will undertake. 813 departs Bewdley for Kidderminster. 7812 'Erlestoke Manor' stands over the pit. It really is a place you have to go too to get a feel for it. Many people may know that part of the charm of the forest is the Ponies, donkeys and cattle that roam around freely through the forest and several of the villages. This was also my last chance to get some photos of the infamous slam door units in operation on the Lymington branch which are due to be replaced in December this year. I was lucky enough to have both units running on the Monday & Tuesday of my break. Originally there were only two locomotives in the fleet, these were an 0-6-2 tank named Rosemary built in 2001, and an 0-4-0 diesel shunter named Eddy constructed in the same year. The two steam locomotives in use were: Another 0-6-2 tank (now running with tender) named Naomi which was built in 2002. And a 2-6-0 tender loco named Mariloo built in 2008 to avoid constant double headed use on heavier trains. Sadly i didn't ride the trains as it wasn't possible to without paying for the gardens aswell. Even when asking at the ticket office if it was allowed we were told it was not possible. Shame as that would have been an extra £7 for the centre. It was a single track line that ran for about 19 miles between Salisbury and West Moors where it connected to the original Castlemans Corkscrew route that ran from Southampton to Dorchester. The second set of shots are taken on the 'old road'. The original main line that ran between Southampton and Dorchester before the main Waterloo-Weymouth route via Bournemouth was constructed. The route closed to passengers in May 1964 and closed completely in August 1967, it offers some stunning walks in the heart of the New Forest. The station of Breamore has been preserved to a very good standard. The station was opened in December 1866, and was closed in 1964. The remains of the other platform. Looking towards Salisbury, when i last visited in 2004-5, there were plans to turn this into a cycle path, i doubt much came of the idea. More shots of the restored platform and station. Sadly i didn't get a shot of the main Holmsley station but i did get a shot of the surviving platform that runs for quite some way. The remains of an old signal. One of the interesting points of the route is Goatspen Crossing. This modern building was constructed in 2003ish. The original idea was to restore the original crossing keepers house that stood here, but due to constant vandalism and fires it was demolished. The rails are still visible at the crossing. Looking back towards Brockenhurst. A sign showing a picture of how the station once looked, it has since been painted in a creamy white colour. The station was originally named Christchurch road but was later renamed. The station was built to serve Christchurch many many miles away. The station saw considerable use during the war due to airfields being constructed near by.

The place has always been fascinating, specially with the 7 1/4" gauge line running through part of it. A well established fully signalled line stands where there was once just a barn. Three locomotives were in service, these were: No. 11 'Zeus' No. 15 'William Rufus' No. 18 'Thor' Sunday 30 August 2009: I have been going to the Moors Valley Country park on holidays since i was a kid. The place has always been fascinating, specially with the 7 1/4" gauge line running through part of it. A well established fully signalled line stands where there was once just a barn. One of the newer locos to the fleet is No. 18 'Thor', she is captured at Lakeside station awaiting departure for Kingsmere. Thor departs, the locomotive is based on a South African design, but currently carries a full size Bulleid whistle, under her nameplate she also carries an A4 chime whistle. Another south african designed loco is No. 11 'Zeus' , she is seen rounding a curve near Lakeside station. No. 15 'William Rufus' stands outside Kingsmere station, she is the only Garratt designed locomotive on the line. Inside the sheds No. 7 'Aelfred', a small tank engine, stands alongside the larger No. 12 'Pioneer' No. 6 'Medea' was running on my last visit 3 years ago. Plenty of locomotives are seen in the sheds, the two in main view are No. 5 'Sapper' and to the right 'Perseus' Thor heads for Kingsmere. William Rufus departs Kingsmere. It had been near 2 and a half years since my last visit, so another one was long overdue! We spent the day riding the trains and looking at the various stations and towns along the way. In service: Unrebuilt Bulleid West Country No. 34007 'Wadebridge' Visiting GWR 2-8-0 tank No. 5224 Saturday 29 August 2009: 2009 seems to be a revisiting year for me, so it was important to go back to my favourite preserved railway, the Watercress line. In the early morning sun LNER A4 Pacific No. 60019 'Bittern' stands alongside SR Lord Nelson Class No. 850 'Lord Nelson', which was in light steam for fears 34007 may not be able to run. Standard 5 No. 73096 sits in the yard at Ropley since being withdrawn earlier this year from her cylinder failure. Visiting GWR 2-8-0 tank No. 5224 takes on water at Alton. At the same location we see Unrebuilt Bulleid No. 34007 'Wadebridge' run round her train. 34007 'Wadebridge' awaits departure. 34007 is captured alongside the recent board that has been placed along the track, the loco shown is resident Merchant Navy No. 35005 'Canadian Pacific' in unrebuilt form. Wadebridge prepares to depeart Medstead & four Marks. One of the many projects the Wagon team at Medstead have undertaken, doesn't it look fantastic, thanks to Chris Willis for the tour. Viewed from a brakevan No. 5224 arrives bound for Alton. Some rail still remains leading to one of the goods buildings. A goods shed is seen at Medstead made from old railway sleepers, the station sign originally came from Brockenhurst located on the Waterloo - Weymouth mainline. A4 No. 60019 'Bittern' poses at Ropley. On my last visit rebuilt West Country No. 34016 'Bodmin' was still in ticket, however she was sitting in the same place she is now. Sadly she is out of ticket. Another out of ticket engine is Ivatt 2MT No. 41312. Her main claim to fame is she was the last steam loco to run on the Lymington branch, the last steam hauled branch line. 34007 moves on shed. 73096 looks bare minus her cylinder, she is seen infront of new arrival USA tank No. 30075. 34007 & 60019 pose in the late afternoon. The first time i went on the train it was hauled by GWR Hall No. 4965 "Rood Ashton Hall", now undergoing overhaul. This time round it was hauled by GWR Castle No. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe". These shots show an excellent recreation of Bournemouth Central as it was in the 50/60's for Microsoft Train Simulator. Her frames were laid at Tyseley so it really was a home coming for her. Plenty to see and do as always around the site, including the miniature railway running, pump trolley demonstrations, and the chance to look around many of the Museum's railway artifacts. Two locomotives were in service: Robert Stephenson & Hawthorne 0-6-0 No. 54 "Penn Green" hauling the newly restored Vintage G.E.R coaches. Class 04 No. D2279/11249 hauling the wagons. I have to say it was very surreal seeing the general public holding the leaflet with my picture on! Built in 1890 this 6 wheeled G.E.R brake coach has recently been restored. The 4 wheeled first class G.E.R coach was built in 1878. As can be seen there is still work to be done including padding on the doors, fitting of light covers, completion of the closest compartment and i assume lining and numbers applied on the exterior. Still my favourite feature of the Museum, the impressive Goods Shed stands proud. The steam power was provided by Penn Green. One of three signal boxes on site, however this one is in it's original location, but is no longer connected. One of the loco crew talks to a staff member. I was pleased to see Saddle tank Restored for viewing purposes only, an LNER teak second Class open. The inside is stripped so i would have thought thats the reason for no windows! This is one of only two GER bogied coaches preserved, the other being at the North Norfolk Railway. Alongside the coach is 0-4-0 Saddle tank Penn Green passes the GER Third class brake coach, now used as stores. A Crane poses infront of the shed. Class 04 No. 11249 is seen with the wagons. Sadly journey times were severely increased due to network rail shutting all of the lines i needed to use. With a return journey taking up to 5 1/2 hours due to one of the rail replacement buses catching fire and closing the A12 for over an hour, and my mums car having a smoking tyre. The visit to the CVR was very pleasent, fine weather complimented the vast array of vehicles on display and trains running. Visiting 0-4-0 saddle tank "Castle Donington Power Station No.1" was running alongside a resident DMU. What you see today at the CVR has been built from scratch, there was never a station on the site, just a single line going through a cutting. I would also like to extend my thanks to the staff & volunteers of the CVR for finding me and giving me a lift back to the station after the special bus service had to be cancelled. ]]> Mon Apr 13 2009 Canal Boats & Battlefield Diesels. http://kieranhardy.fotopic.net/c1682421.html I spent a few days on a friends parents canal boat, this was combined with a visit to the Battlefield line. Only diesels were operating during the weekend. These were: Class 33 No. 33019 "Griffon" on Saturday. Visiting Class 25 No. 25067 on Sunday. Also running was Class 04 No. 04110 at Shackertone providing cab rides and the chance for people to drive it up and down the station area for £5. Sadly the weather wasn't good for any of the days so decent pictures were difficult to get! Friday 10 April 2009: I spent a few days on a friends parents canal boat, this was combined with a visit to the Battlefield line. Only diesels were operating during the weekend. On the Sunday was the NNR's "Living History" event showing the railway as it would have been like in the 1920's with various people dressing up and many attractions happening at each of the stations. Quite a good event with plenty to see. 0-4-0 saddle tank "Jubilee" was the steam loco in service having only first steamed last Sunday after her overhaul which lasted 10 years. Also in service was a 2 car DMU and an 04 Shunter, plus visitors had the chance to have a go on a "Pump trolley". One steam loco was in service and that was Stroudley Terrier Class No. 662 "Martello".
