17th Oct 2009A day at the East Anglian Railway Museum.
What could be my final railway visit for 2009, here are the shots i took of a visit to the East Anglian Railway Museum. Although no service trains were running a railway experience course was taking place on No. 54 'Penn Green'. The two car DMU was also being used for driver training though i didn't get any shots.
27th Sep 2009SVR Autumn Steam Gala 2009 Sunday.
The final day of the gala, by now i was feeling completely wiped out and starting to come down with a fever/cold! But that didn't stop me from taking part in the final day of this big event. I also paid a visit to the Engine house at Highley, something i hadn't done for near a year and a half.
26th Sep 2009SVR Autumn Steam Gala 2009 Saturday.
Here are shots of the second day of the gala, by this time i was starting to feel worse for wear due to being awake from 7:30am Friday morning. Little did i know i wouldn't be getting any sleep till 2am Sunday morning...

I was lucky enough to be offered a brakevan ride behind the goods at night behind 813 between Bridgnorth and Hampton Loade, quite an experience.
25th Sep 2009SVR Autumn Steam Gala 2009 Friday.
The SVR Autumn Steam Gala is without a doubt one of the must dos in the heritage railway calendar. The intensive timetable with the usual highlight of all night running made yet another appearance.
This year i feel the gala was slightly more low key and i didn't feel it was as busy as it was in previous years. I also felt some of the locomotives wern't used as much as they could have been, such as the Manors and Small Prairie.

    The lineup consisted of:

    Visiting:

Gresley 0-6-2 N2 No. 1744 from the GCR.
GWR Hall 4-6-0 No. 4936 'Kinlet Hall' from Tyseley.
LMS Ivatt 2-6-2 No. 41241 from KWVR.
GWR 0-6-2 No. 5643 from Llangollen.

    Resident:

LMS Ivatt Class 4 No. 43106 AKA 'The Flying Pig'
LMS Ivatt Class 2MT No. 46443
    LMS Stanier Mogul No. 42968
Ex-Port Talbort 0-6-0 No. 813 (making her last appearance before overhaul)
    GWR Pannier Tank No. 5764
GWR Manor No. 7802 'Bradley Manor'
GWR Manor No. 7812 'Erlestoke Manor'
    GWR Small Prairie No. 4566
GWR Large Prairie No. 5164 (backup engine)

On the Friday Kinlet Hall was withdrawn due to safety valve issues so 5164 operated her services for the day.
6th Sep 2009North Norfolk Railway Autumn Steam Gala.
A rather unplanned visit to the NNR for their annual steam gala. With thanks to the people who invited me and gave me a lift!

    The gala consisted of:

GWR 4-4-0 No. 3440 'City of Truro'
    GNR N2 0-6-2T No. 1744
    GWR 56xx 0-6-2T No. 6619
GWR 'Small Prairie' 2-6-2 No. 5521*
    LNER N7 0-6-2T No. 69621
    GER J15 0-6-0 No. 65462
Hunslet 0-6-0ST No. 1982 'Ring Haw'

*Sadly the Small Prairie had been declared failed on the Sunday, instead visiting Class 24 No. 24081 had the honours.
    1st Sep 2009Watercress Line Part 2.
Before i made my trip back to Essex, one more visit to the MHR was on the cards. Hopefully it won't be another 2 and a half years till i go back!

    In service:

    GWR 2-8-0 tank No. 5224
    DMU

    On a steam enginemans course:

    Slammers and the New Forest.
One of my favourite places in the UK has to be the New Forest, a beautiful national park situated between Bournemouth and Southampton. It really is a place you have to go too to get a feel for it. Many people may know that part of the charm of the forest is the Ponies, donkeys and cattle that roam around freely through the forest and several of the villages.

This was also my last chance to get some photos of the infamous slam door units in operation on the Lymington branch which are due to be replaced in December this year.

I was lucky enough to have both units running on the Monday & Tuesday of my break.
31st Aug 2009Exbury Garden Steam Railway.
The 12 1/4" gauge Railway at Exbury gardens was constructed in 2000/2001 and is located near Beaulieu in the New Forest. Originally there were only two locomotives in the fleet, these were an 0-6-2 tank named Rosemary built in 2001, and an 0-4-0 diesel shunter named Eddy constructed in the same year.

The two steam locomotives in use were:

Another 0-6-2 tank (now running with tender) named Naomi which was built in 2002.
And a 2-6-0 tender loco named Mariloo built in 2008 to avoid constant double headed use on heavier trains.

Sadly i didn't ride the trains as it wasn't possible to without paying for the gardens aswell. Even when asking at the ticket office if it was allowed we were told it was not possible. Shame as that would have been an extra £7 for the centre.
    30th Aug 2009
    to 31st Aug 2009
Breamore Station and a short walk along the Old Road.
The first shots in this gallery are of Breamore Station, situated on the Salisbury & Dorset Junction Railway. Following many years of being derelict the station building and platform were restored in 2004-2005, and at that time used as an office. The line closed in May 1964. It was a single track line that ran for about 19 miles between Salisbury and West Moors where it connected to the original Castlemans Corkscrew route that ran from Southampton to Dorchester.

The second set of shots are taken on the 'old road'. The original main line that ran between Southampton and Dorchester before the main Waterloo-Weymouth route via Bournemouth was constructed. The route closed to passengers in May 1964 and closed completely in August 1967, it offers some stunning walks in the heart of the New Forest. One of the stations, a few miles away from Brockenhurst survives, Holmsley has since become a tea rooms, though nothing survives of the next station of Ringwood.
    30th Aug 2009Moors Valley Railway.
I have been going to the Moors Valley Country park on holidays since i was a kid. The place has always been fascinating, specially with the 7 1/4" gauge line running through part of it. A well established fully signalled line stands where there was once just a barn.

Three locomotives were in service, these were:

    No. 11 'Zeus'
    No. 15 'William Rufus'
    No. 18 'Thor'
    29th Aug 2009Watercress Line Part 1.
2009 seems to be a revisiting year for me, so it was important to go back to my favourite preserved railway, the Watercress line. It had been near 2 and a half years since my last visit, so another one was long overdue!

We spent the day riding the trains and looking at the various stations and towns along the way.

    In service:

Unrebuilt Bulleid West Country No. 34007 'Wadebridge'
Visiting GWR 2-8-0 tank No. 5224
    26th Jul 2009The Shakespeare Express.
To round off the holiday we went on the Shakespeare Express which runs twice every Sunday until September. The first time i went on the train it was hauled by GWR Hall No. 4965 "Rood Ashton Hall", now undergoing overhaul. This time round it was hauled by GWR Castle No. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe".
As you can see the weather was poor!
25th Jul 2009Great Central Railway Mail by Rail Gala.
2009 seems to be a revisiting year for me railway wise. I last visited the GCR probably late 2006/very early 2007. A very enjoyable event with plenty to see with no less than four steam locomotives and four diesels running operating passenger, freight and mail workings.

    In operation was:

LMS Fairburn No. 42085 (on loan from the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway)
SR King Arthur No. 30777 "Sir Lamiel"
    LMS 8F No. 48305
    BR Standard 2MT No. 78019
    Class 25 No.D5185
    Class 27 No.D5401
    Class 47 No.D1705 "Sparrow hawk"
    Class 101 DMU
    22nd Jul 2009Return to Didcot.
I last visited Didcot in 2006 on a non steam day with my previous camera. Armed with my newer one i set about getting some better quality images.

    In operation was:

    GWR 4300 'Mogul' No. 5322
GWR Saddle Tank No. 1340 "Trojan"

Also included are shots taken the next day around Heyford, where we saw a genuine steam narrow boat named "President"
    18th Jul 2009Foxfield Steam Gala
A first visit to this preserved railway to see the industrial locomotives working hard on various workings. Weather was very poor for the majority of the time so good photos were few.

Six steam locomotives were in operation:

Haydock Foundry Well Tank No. C "Bellerophron"
Bagnall Saddle Tank No. 3059 "Florence No. 2"
Hunslet Austeriy Saddle Tank No. 3839 "Wimblebury"
Robert Stephenson & Hawthorn No. 7864 "Meaford No. 2"
Beyer Peacock Saddle Tank No. 1827
    Backworth Saddle Tank No. 47

Also included are a couple of canal scenes taken on the following day.
2nd Jul 2009The Magic of Bournemouth Central.
It's been too long since i last uploaded screenshots to this website. I have still been taking them but haven't made the effort to upload them to here.

These shots show an excellent recreation of Bournemouth Central as it was in the 50/60's for Microsoft Train Simulator. I have had the privilage of testing out the New Forest V2 route which will shortly be released.
    28th Jun 2009Echills Wood Railway.
The Echills Wood Railway is a 7 1/4 inch gauge railway situated at Kingsbury water park. The journey time on the line is currently about 8-9 minutes but the line is extending and will be adding more stations in the future to extend the enjoyment and ride time for visitors. It passes some very nice scenery and has quite an extensive sized loco fleet.
    28th Jun 2009Tyseley 101 Open Day.
The original plan for Sunday was to stay at the SVR and lineside, however due to the very hot weather we decided that we didn't really want to spend most of the day on fields. Instead we went to Tyseley for their open day.
The star of the show was no doubt visiting newly built A1 Pacific No. 60163 "Tornado". Her frames were laid at Tyseley so it really was a home coming for her.
In total there were 9 steam locomotives in steam plus a steam crane, they were:

    A1 Pacific No. 60163 "Tornado"
GWR Castle No. 5043 "Earl of Mount Edgcumbe"
GWR Castle No. 5029 "Nunney Castle"
GWR Hall No. 4936 "Kinlet Hall"
GWR Hall No. 4953 "Pitchford Hall" *
    GWR Pannier tank No. 9600
Peckett 0-4-0 Saddle Tank No. 2004
    Ffestiniog 0-4-0 Hunslet "Lilla"
    Replica of "Locomotion"

    * 4953 seemed to stay out of view for my entire visit, so no shots sadly.

    On static display outside were:

    LMS Jubiliee No. 45593 "Kolhapur"
BR WR Castle No. 7029 "Clun Castle"

On static display in the sheds were:

GWR Hall No. 4965 "Rood Ashton Hall" undergoing overhaul.
    Replica LNWR Bloomer under construction.
    GWR Pannier Tank No. 7760
    GWR Pannier Tank No. 7752
Large Prairie No. 4110 awaiting restoration.
    27th Jun 2009Severn Valley Railway 1940's Event.
A very warm visit to the SVR's war time 1940's event. Plenty to see and do with various vechicle and war displays, bands, singers, a Spitfire flypass and many people dressed up in period costume.

All 6 available steam locomotives were in service:

GWR Manor No. 7802 "Bradley Manor"
GWR Manor No. 7812 "Erlestoke Manor"*
    LMS Ivatt No. 46443
    LMS Stanier Mogul No. 42968
    GWR Small Prairie No. 4566*
    GWR Pannier Tank No. 7714

    * Sadly i didn't manage to get any photos of these locos, thankfully i've got plenty of shots from past visits!
24th May 2009East Anglian Railway Museum Family Day.
After about 7 months since my last visit, i finally made a return trip to the East Anglian Railway Museum at Chappel and Wakes Colne.

Plenty to see and do as always around the site, including the miniature railway running, pump trolley demonstrations, and the chance to look around many of the Museum's railway artifacts.

    Two locomotives were in service:

Robert Stephenson & Hawthorne 0-6-0 No. 54 "Penn Green" hauling the newly restored Vintage G.E.R coaches.
Class 04 No. D2279/11249 hauling the wagons.

I have to say it was very surreal seeing the general public holding the leaflet with my picture on!
17th May 2009Colne Valley Railway at War.
The Colne Valley Railway held their war time event on Sunday 17th May. This included many people dressed up in period costume, war time vechicle & Millitary displays, Evacuation trains & bomb trains.

Two steam locos were in service:

Visiting Hudswell Clarke 0-6-0 "Jennifer" on passenger services.
Resident Avonside built 0-4-0 "Barrington" on the bomb train.

Also in operation was an Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 diesel shunter No. 3211 running light engine up and down the station.
16th May 2009Oliver Cromwell at Norwich.
As British Railways Standard 7MT No. 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" was due to arrive at Norwich with "The Easterling" we decided to stick around to see her arrival and departure.
    16th May 2009North Norfolk Railway.
A return visit to the NNR on Saturday. I was expecting to see 0-6-0 J15 No. 65462 and Class 31 No. 31207 in service. However WD 2-10-0 No. 90775 & Class 25 No. 25057 had the honours.

90775 was also used to haul a wedding special for a couple who tied the knot at Weybourne Station.
18th Apr 2009Colne Valley Railway Vintage Vehicle Rally Day.
It had been almost two years since i last visited the CVR. Sadly journey times were severely increased due to network rail shutting all of the lines i needed to use. With a return journey taking up to 5 1/2 hours due to one of the rail replacement buses catching fire and closing the A12 for over an hour, and my mums car having a smoking tyre.

The visit to the CVR was very pleasent, fine weather complimented the vast array of vehicles on display and trains running.

Visiting 0-4-0 saddle tank "Castle Donington Power Station No.1" was running alongside a resident DMU.

What you see today at the CVR has been built from scratch, there was never a station on the site, just a single line going through a cutting.

I would also like to extend my thanks to the staff & volunteers of the CVR for finding me and giving me a lift back to the station after the special bus service had to be cancelled.
13th Apr 2009Severn Valley Railway Bank Holiday Monday.
A visit to the Severn Valley Railway was complimented with some pretty stunning weather. A complete breath of fresh air from the weather we had the days before. Six steam locos were running:

Visiting Standard 8P No. 71000 "Duke of Gloucester"
    Large Prairie No. 5164
    Small Prairie No. 4566
GWR Manor No. 7802 "Bradley Manor"
GWR Manor No. 7812 "Erlestoke Manor"
    Ivatt 2MT No. 46443
    10th Apr 2009
    to 12th Apr 2009
    Canal Boats & Battlefield Diesels.
I spent a few days on a friends parents canal boat, this was combined with a visit to the Battlefield line. Only diesels were operating during the weekend.
    These were:

Class 33 No. 33019 "Griffon" on Saturday.
Visiting Class 25 No. 25067 on Sunday.

Also running was Class 04 No. 04110 at Shackertone providing cab rides and the chance for people to drive it up and down the station area for £5.

Sadly the weather wasn't good for any of the days so decent pictures were difficult to get!

30th Dec 2008North Norfolk Railway Mince Pie Specials.
My final bit of steam for 2008 was from a surprise visit to the NNR for their mince pie specials. We had hoped to see Ring Haw in action but due to failing the N7 was put into service instead.

Happy new year to all my visitors!

Spent a few hours at the E.A.R.M again, today was their steam & diesel day. With Penn Green in service again along with the DMU, i had plenty to photograph with my new camera. The weather was very mixed with sunshine at times and the odd shower.

    News -

4/10/09 - The SVR gala galleries will probably be the last main railway visits of 2009 as i currently have nothing else planned. I would hope there might be a final day visit to NNR or EARM for this year but other than that there are no definate plans to attend any further large events.

30/06/09 - It has come to my attention firefox 3.5 has now been released. Please note there is an issue with this version of the browser that alters the brightness of some photos on any website. I had problems with it darkening my images making them look awful, i have had to revert to my previous version.

    Latest Updates -

    18/10/09 - EARM shots added.

30/9/09 - All SVR Gala shots uploaded.

7/9/09 - NNR Gala shots uploaded.

5/9/09 - More Watercress line shots

4/9/09 - Slammers in the New Forest

    3/9/09 - Exbury Garden Railway

02/9/09 - Watercress line shots added.
    Moors Valley Railway shots added.
